The fire marshal is coming, and unlike an air auditor who wants paperwork, this inspector is looking at your booth as a fire and explosion risk. Spray finishing combines atomized flammable liquids, solvent vapor, and heat — and the thing standing between a normal workday and a flash fire is a booth that's ventilating properly and free of caked overspray. The good news: a fire-marshal inspection is very predictable. If you know what NFPA 33 emphasizes, you can walk in ready.

NFPA 33, the Standard for Spray Application Using Flammable or Combustible Materials, is the technical backbone most fire marshals enforce alongside the adopted fire code. What the fire marshal is actually worried about

Every item on the checklist traces back to three fire-safety fundamentals:

  • Keep vapor concentrations below the flammable range. That takes continuous, adequate airflow moving overspray and solvent vapor out of the booth.
  • Don't let fuel accumulate. Dried overspray on walls, floors, ducts, and light fixtures is combustible. Caked filters and overspray buildup are stored fuel waiting for an ignition source.
  • Keep ignition sources away from the vapor. Proper electrical classification, no smoking/hot work, and interlocks that stop spraying if airflow stops.

Filters and airflow sit at the center of the first two. The pre-inspection checklist

Walk your booth with this list a few days before the inspection so you have time to fix anything. Aim to check off every item.

1. Airflow and ventilation

  1. Ventilation runs continuously whenever spraying occurs, and the spray equipment is interlocked with the exhaust fan so you cannot spray without airflow.
  2. Airflow is adequate to keep vapor below the flammable range and to move overspray to the filters — confirm face velocity meets your booth manufacturer's specification and any value your AHJ enforces.

  4. The booth reaches proper airflow before spraying starts and holds it — no starving the booth to stretch filter life. If flow is weak, work through low-airflow troubleshooting before the visit.

2. Filter condition and loading

  1. Exhaust filters are present in every position, correctly seated, and sealed at the edges — no gaps, no bypass paths where overspray sneaks past into the duct.
  2. Filters are within their loading limit, not caked solid. Heavy, saturated, dripping, or collapsed filters are both an airflow and a fire finding.
  3. Filters are the correct type and rating for the booth — don't improvise with the wrong media. Fresh, correctly rated exhaust filters installed before the inspection is the easiest single win.
  4. Intake/ceiling filters are clean and intact so the booth pressurizes correctly.
  5. No overspray breakthrough is visible on the clean side of the exhaust filters or in the duct — breakthrough means the filters failed or were overdue.

3. Changeout records

4. Housekeeping and overspray buildup

  1. No heavy dried-overspray buildup on booth walls, floor, door tracks, ductwork, or light fixture lenses. Peeling, flaking overspray is combustible fuel.
  2. Booth lights are the sealed, gasketed type and their lenses are clean — caked overspray on a hot lens is an ignition concern.
  3. Floors are clean; use protective floor coverings that you change regularly rather than letting overspray layer up on the floor.
  4. Spray-gun cleaning is done in an enclosed cleaner, not in the open booth, and solvent-soaked rags are stored in a closed, labeled metal container.
  5. Flammable coatings and solvents are stored in approved cabinets/containers, with only the working quantity in the booth area.
  6. Aisles and exits are clear, and the required fire extinguisher(s) are present, charged, and accessible. Confirm any fixed suppression system is serviced and tagged.

5. Equipment and ignition control

  1. Electrical equipment in and around the booth is the proper classified type; no unapproved fixtures, extension cords, or space heaters in the spray area.
  2. Bonding and grounding are in place where required to control static.
  3. "No smoking" and "no hot work" are posted and enforced in the spray area.
