What is NESHAP 6H?
NESHAP 6H is the EPA's National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for paint stripping and miscellaneous surface coating operations at area sources — 40 CFR Part 63 Subpart HHHHHH. In plain English: it's the federal rule that auto body shops, fleet shops, and miscellaneous coating operations have to follow when they spray paint. The rule requires every spray booth, prep station, and mobile enclosure to use filters that capture at least 98% of paint overspray, as demonstrated by ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 52.2 or EPA Method 319 testing. Manufacturer-published efficiency data is acceptable proof.
What is NFPA 33?
NFPA 33 is the fire-safety standard from the National Fire Protection Association covering spray application of flammable or combustible materials. It sets the construction, ventilation, electrical, and filter requirements that make a spray booth safe to operate. The relevant filter section (§5.1.1.2) requires that air intake filters in wall or ceiling assemblies be listed to ANSI/UL 900 — the standard that tests filter media for flammability and smoke generation. That's why compliant ceiling and intake filters carry a UL 900 Class 1 or Class 2 listing.
Why this matters for your shop
Compliance is a paperwork rule as much as a hardware rule. EPA inspectors and your local Authority Having Jurisdiction expect you to produce filter efficiency documentation, painter training records, and notification reports on demand. Civil penalties for NESHAP non-compliance can reach tens of thousands of dollars per day, per violation — and an insurance claim after a booth fire can hinge on whether your filters carried the right UL 900 listing. Keeping the certificate of compliance for every filter you install — and being able to produce it during an audit — is the cheapest insurance in the shop.
