Temperature and humidity change how paint atomizes, how fast overspray builds, how static behaves, and even whether your clear coat blushes. Ignore the climate and you'll either throw away filters with life left in them or, worse, run past the point where airflow and finish quality fall apart.

Why the calendar is the wrong trigger

A filter's job is to capture particulate while letting air pass. As it loads, resistance (static pressure) rises. What humidity actually does to your filters and finish

High humidity

  • Slower solvent flash, heavier wet overspray. Moist air slows solvent evaporation, so overspray stays wetter longer and packs into exhaust media faster. Filters can load quicker and feel heavier.
  • Blushing on solvent finishes. When humidity is high and temperature drops, moisture can condense into the film and create a milky blush in clear or single-stage. That's a paint-and-air problem, but it often gets misdiagnosed as a filter or airflow issue.
  • Waterborne dries slower. Waterborne basecoats rely on evaporation and airflow to cure. Low humidity

  • Static electricity. Dry air lets static build on media, panels, and parts. Static attracts dust and can cause overspray to cling in the wrong places, showing up as specks and fisheyes in the finish.
  • Faster flash, drier overspray. Overspray dries in flight and arrives at the exhaust filter as a light, dusty solid. It can build a fine cake that blinds the surface even though the filter doesn't feel "heavy."
  • Dust intrusion. Dry seasons kick up more ambient dust, loading intake and ceiling media faster than you'd expect.

What temperature does

Temperature drives paint viscosity and evaporation rate, which changes how much material lands versus how much becomes airborne overspray. It also changes air density, which your fan and manometer both feel.

  • Cold intake air is denser and often dustier from winter conditions; painters may also thin/reduce differently, changing overspray character. Cold booths run longer bake and flash times, moving more air through filters per job.

  1. Record baseline pressure with fresh filters installed. That's your clean starting point.
  2. Log the reading at the start of each day or shift. A rising trend tells you how fast you're loading right now, in today's weather.
  3. Change at the manufacturer's final resistance, or when airflow/finish quality drops, whichever comes first, not on a date.
  4. Note the season. Over a year you'll learn your own booth's summer-vs-winter curve and can pre-stock accordingly.
