How Often to Change Compressed-Air Filter Elements: A Paint Shop Schedule

Compressed-Air Filter Element Change Schedule — Spray Booth Shop paint booth blog

Spray Booth Shop |

Compressed-air filter elements fail quietly. There's no warning light on most of them, the housing looks the same on day 300 as it did on day one, and the first sign of trouble is often a fisheye or a cloudy clearcoat. By then the element has been passing contamination for a while.

The fix is a schedule. Below is RTi's recommended change interval for every unit in their paint shop line, plus how to spot an element that needs replacing early. We carry the full RTi line as an authorized dealer, including every replacement element and maintenance kit listed here.

The general rule

RTi's general maintenance guide says to replace filter elements every 6–12 months, depending on use. High-volume shops, oil-lubricated compressors and humid climates belong at the short end. Several units have their own, stricter schedules, especially desiccant cartridges and breathing air elements.

Change schedule by unit

Unit Elements Change interval (RTi) Kit
PERF-25 Perfect Air® 3P-060 + 3C-060 (pre-filter), 3C-060 (after filter) Every 6 months; desiccant every 3–5 years PERF-25-MK, -RK, -TCMK
PERF-50 Perfect Air® 3P-090 + 3C-090 (pre-filter), 3C-060 (after filter) Every 6 months; desiccant every 3–5 years PERF-50 kits
EH4000 Eliminator® II 4P-060 (carbon), DE401 (desiccant) 4P-060 every 6 months; DE401 when indicator turns pink or every 3 months DE406 (6-pack of DE401)
EH7000 Eliminator® II 4P-060, 3C-090, DE401 6 months / 6 months / when pink or 2–3 months DE406
STEALTH 6950B 6950-1 6–12 months —
STEALTH 6960B 6960-1 6–12 months —
STEALTH 6060B 6960-1 + 3C-060 6–12 months —
EX108 / EX208 / C108 mainline 1P-150 / 1P-150 + 3C-150 / 3C-150 6–12 months —
BRAD-BD1 breathing air 4P-060 + 3C-061 4P-060 every 3 months; 3C-061 every 6 months BRAD-01C-MK (1-year kit)
BRAD-PERF breathing + paint air DE362C + 3C-151 (+ 3C-060 after filter) Every 6 months BRAD-02C-MK (1-year kit)

The BRAD-BD1 figures follow RTi's breathing air sheet, which calls for the 4P-060 every 3 months to keep Grade D air. That's stricter than the general rule on purpose: breathing air is a safety system, not just a finish system. More on that in our guide to supplied breathing air for paint booths.

Signs an element is due early

  • The moisture indicator changes color. On Eliminator® II dryers, the DE401 desiccant is spent when the indicator turns from blue to pink, regardless of how long it's been in. RTi's moisture indicator paper (TP-651) and sight glasses show the same thing on Perfect Air® systems.
  • Pressure drop climbs. A loaded element restricts flow, so the gun sees less pressure at the same regulator setting. RTi's N32-W1-DPi differential pressure indicator shows when an element is loaded.
  • Finish defects return. Fisheyes point to oil getting past the carbon or coalescing stage. Cloudy clear or slow flash points to moisture.
  • Visible oil or water downstream of the filter, in the hose or at the gun.

How to change an RTi element

  1. Shut off and isolate the air supply to the unit, then bleed the pressure.
  2. Release the bowl. RTi units use a quick-disconnect clamp ring or snap-lock ring, so no tools are needed.
  3. Spin off the old element by hand and spin on the new one.
  4. Hand-tighten only. RTi's guide is clear: do not overtighten.
  5. Check the bowl O-ring, reseat the bowl, restore air slowly and check for leaks.
  6. Write the date on the unit or in your maintenance log.

RTi publishes a printable maintenance log for each system at rti-pbe.com. Hang it next to the unit. For breathing air, a dated record is more than good practice: OSHA requires a tag at the compressor with the most recent change date and the signature of the person who did it.

Maintenance kits make it simpler

For Perfect Air® systems, RTi bundles everything for each service into one kit, priced below the cost of the parts bought separately:

  • PERF-25-MK maintenance kit: the three elements for the 6-month change (one 3P-060, two 3C-060).
  • PERF-25-RK repair kit: elements plus fresh desiccant beads, fittings and indicator paper to repack the towers every 3–5 years.
  • PERF-25-TCMK tower change-out kit: elements plus two pre-packed desiccant towers, so you can swap the towers instead of repacking them.

Breathing air systems have one-year kits (BRAD-01C-MK and BRAD-02C-MK) that hold a full year of elements. Order one and you've covered the year.

Don't forget the booth filters

Clean compressed air protects the finish from the inside of the hose. Your booth filters protect it from everything else. Keep both on schedule; our spray booth maintenance guide covers the booth side.

Frequently asked questions

How often should compressed air filter elements be changed?

RTi's general guidance is every 6 to 12 months, depending on use. Desiccant cartridges and breathing air elements have stricter schedules, for example every 3 months for the BRAD-BD1's 4P-060 carbon element.

How do I know when desiccant needs changing?

On RTi Eliminator® II dryers, change the DE401 desiccant cartridge when the moisture indicator turns from blue to pink, or every 3 months, whichever comes first.

How long does Perfect Air® desiccant last?

The regenerating desiccant beads in RTi Perfect Air® systems last 3 to 5 years. The towers are then repacked with the PERF-RK repair kit, or swapped for pre-packed towers with the PERF-TCMK kit.

Do I need tools to change RTi filter elements?

No. RTi units use tool-less spin-on, spin-off elements with a quick-disconnect clamp ring or snap-lock ring. Hand-tighten the new element and don't overtighten it.

Never run out of elements

The easiest way to stay on schedule is to have the next element on the shelf before the current one is due. Tell us which RTi units you run and we'll put together the elements and kits for a full year.
