Most finishing shops think about filtration in terms of what happens inside the booth — the ceiling intake media and the exhaust filters. But in any heated, pressurized booth there's an upstream machine doing just as much for your finish and your fuel bill: the air make-up unit, or AMU. It's the box that pulls in outside air, cleans it, heats it, and pushes it into the booth to replace everything the exhaust fan throws out. When shops chase finish defects, high gas bills, or a booth that won't hold pressure, the AMU and its filtration are the parts they most often overlook.

What an air make-up unit does
A spray booth is a giant exhaust fan. It continuously pulls air out and pushes it through your exhaust filters to the outdoors. That air has to be replaced — you can't remove thousands of CFM and not put it back, or the booth goes negative, doors won't open, and dirty air gets sucked in through every crack. The AMU is what replaces it. Its core jobs:
- Supply make-up air. It draws in fresh outdoor air to match what the exhaust removes, keeping the booth at the right pressure.
- Filter that air. Outdoor air is full of dust, pollen, and grit. The AMU filters it before it ever reaches the booth — the first line of defense for your finish.
- Heat (and sometimes control humidity of) the air. A burner section warms incoming air to spray temperature and, critically, to bake/cure temperature for the cure cycle.
- Move the air at the volume and velocity the booth is designed around, feeding the downward or crossflow path the booth relies on.
In short: the AMU decides the temperature, cleanliness, and volume of every cubic foot of air your painter sprays into. Get it wrong and no amount of in-booth filtration fully recovers.
The AMU intake prefilter stage — the part shops neglect
Here's the overlooked piece. Before outdoor air hits the burner and blower, it passes through a prefilter stage at the AMU intake — typically a coarse mesh or panel prefilter that catches leaves, insects, pollen, and heavy grit. This stage is cheap, easy to reach, and doing enormous work: it protects the burner, the blower, the downstream ceiling filters, and ultimately your finish.
When shops forget this filter exists, it loads up, chokes airflow, and drags the burner and blower into working harder — or it tears and lets grit blow straight through to the booth. A clean AMU prefilter is the foundation of the whole intake chain. Shop the media that fits this stage:

Heating and the cure cycle
The AMU's burner is what makes a downdraft bake booth a bake booth. During spraying it holds a comfortable, stable spray temperature; during the bake/cure cycle it ramps the supply air to cure temperature to flash solvents and harden the coating on schedule. Two things quietly sabotage this:
- A loaded prefilter or ceiling filter restricts airflow, so the burner works against reduced volume — you burn more gas to hit temperature, and heat distribution gets uneven.
- Poor balance (below) means the heated air you paid to warm leaks out or gets diluted by unconditioned air sucked in through gaps.

Why AMU-to-booth balance matters most
This is the concept that separates a well-run industrial finishing operation from a frustrating one. AMU prefilter maintenance
Keeping the AMU healthy is mostly about the prefilter stage. A simple routine:
- Inspect the intake prefilter regularly — more often in spring pollen and fall leaf-drop seasons, and after storms. Outdoor conditions load this filter unpredictably.
- Change on restriction, not just calendar. If supply airflow drops or the booth starts losing positive pressure, suspect the AMU prefilter first — it's the cheapest, most-neglected culprit.
- Never run without it. A missing or blown-out prefilter sends grit into the burner, blower, and ceiling filters, and straight onto your finish.
