Why fine-finish woodworking is its own filtration problem
Wood shops fight a different battle than body shops. The overspray is often a fast-drying, low-solids material — nitrocellulose or pre-cat lacquer, conversion varnish, shellac, or waterborne acrylic — sprayed at high volume across long production runs. Three things make filtration critical:
- Sanding dust is everywhere. The same shop that sprays also sands. Fine wood and primer dust drifts, settles, and gets pulled into moving air, then lands in wet finish as nibs.
- Sheen shows everything. Higher gloss and darker stains reveal specks a satin panel would hide. Clean air is not optional for gloss work.

Not every wood finish behaves the same in the airstream, and the waterborne vs. solvent split drives a lot of it. Tune your exhaust choice to what you spray most:

Change schedule and housekeeping for a clean finish
Filters only protect a finish while they are moving the rated volume of air. As media loads, static pressure climbs and airflow drops — and slow air lets overspray and dust settle onto the part. Watch your manometer, not just the calendar:
- Change exhaust media when the manometer hits the manufacturer’s final resistance, or airflow noticeably slows — whichever comes first. Heavy lacquer runs may need changes far sooner than a body shop would expect.
- Change ceiling media on a longer cycle, but never let it load to the point it sheds dust; tackified media that has stopped grabbing is worse than useless.
- Keep the booth clean between changes: blow down and wipe before gloss work, and keep sanding out of the spray space when you can.
