What tackifier actually does
A tackifier is an adhesive coating — usually a light, non-migrating resin — applied to the fibers of the ceiling media. Its job is twofold:
- It grabs and holds captured dust. Instead of a particle resting loosely on a fiber, the tack glues it in place. That raises the filter's effective dust-holding capacity and keeps efficiency high deeper into its service life.
- It stops the filter from shedding into your finish. This is the big one. In a downdraft booth, that ceiling media sits directly above your wet panel. Vibration, pressure pulses, and airflow can shake loosely-held dust — and even stray filter fibers — right out of a non-tackified filter and down onto the clearcoat. Tackifier locks that debris in so it never reaches the part.
