If you run a Global Finishing Solutions (GFS) spray booth, you already know the equipment is built to last — which is exactly why replacement filters get confusing. The booth on your floor may be ten or fifteen years old, the media label is faded, and the original part number is long gone. This guide shows you how to identify the right GFS ceiling (intake) and exhaust filters by series, media type, and size — without gambling on a part number that may no longer exist.
We deliberately do not publish a fake “OEM equivalent” chart. GFS revises part numbers over time, and a wrong number gets you a wrong filter. Instead, you will learn to read the two things that never change: the media type and the frame size. Match those and your filter fits and performs, whatever the old sticker said.
Why GFS filters aren’t one-size-fits-all
GFS builds a wide range of finishing environments — from compact Performer series work booths to large Ultra series downdraft and semi-downdraft paint booths, plus prep stations and industrial systems. Each design moves a specific volume of air through a specific filter footprint. Two booths that look similar from across the shop can take different ceiling media grades and different exhaust configurations.
Because of that, the reliable way to reorder is not “what’s the GFS part number” — it’s “what media and what size does my booth actually use.” Once you know those, any equivalent-grade filter cut to the same dimensions will drop in.
Step 1: Identify your GFS booth series
Start with the data plate. Most GFS booths carry a silver or white ID plate on the control panel or a cabin upright listing the model line (Ultra, Performer, or an industrial/custom designation) and a serial number. If the plate is gone, note these tells:
- Full downdraft (Ultra series): a filtered ceiling spanning most of the cabin roof, with exhaust pulled down through floor grating into a basement pit or exhaust plenum.
- Semi-downdraft / crossflow: intake filters across part of the ceiling near the front, exhaust wall or pit toward the rear.
- Prep station / Performer: smaller footprint, often a partial ceiling filter bank and a filtered back wall.

Step 2: Ceiling (intake) filters — the diffusion media
GFS ceiling filters are the final barrier your make-up air passes through before it reaches the vehicle, so they set your finish quality. They are almost always a tackified synthetic diffusion media — a progressively-dense polyester pad, typically rated F5/M5 under EN 779 / ISO 16890 — held in a ceiling grid.
How to identify the ceiling media
Pull a used panel and check three things:
- Face vs. air side. Ceiling media has a denser, often tackified “dirty air” side that faces down into the booth. Install it wrong-side-out and you lose diffusion — see what happens when a filter goes in wrong-side-out.
- Thickness and loft. Ceiling pads are typically 20–22 mm lofted, far thicker than an exhaust pad.
- Grid size. GFS ceilings are built on standard grid modules, so panels come pre-cut to fit those bays, or as a continuous roll you cut to length.
Measuring the frame
Measure the opening your filter sits in, not the old (shrunken) pad. Record width x length for pre-cut panels, or the bay width for rolls. Step 3: Exhaust filters — pocket/bag and paint-arrestor media
The exhaust side is where compliance lives. GFS booths capture overspray in one of two common ways:
- Fiberglass paint-arrestor pads / rolls under floor grating or in the exhaust plenum — the progressively-dense “spun-glass” media that traps paint solids.
- Pocket / bag exhaust filters in a second stage on many Ultra and industrial systems, where extended-surface bags add dust-holding capacity and longer service life.
Identify which you have by looking downstream of the spray zone: a green-and-white or all-white spun-glass mat means fiberglass paint-arrestor pads (also sold as bulk fiberglass rolls); a row of hanging multi-pocket bags means pocket/bag filters from our exhaust filter bag range. The 98% exhaust rule (NESHAP 6H) — get this right
Your exhaust filter is not just a cost item; it is a regulated control device. Under the federal area-source rule for paint stripping and surface coating (NESHAP Subpart 6H, 40 CFR 63.11173(e)(2)(i)), the exhaust filter technology you use must be demonstrated to capture at least 98% of paint overspray by weight, verified by a recognized method such as ANSI/ASHRAE 52.2-2017 or EPA Method 319 (a 100-gram dust challenge). Note the standard is expressed as arrestance — capture efficiency by weight, not a “98% at 3 microns” particle rating; that phrasing is vendor shorthand, not the rule.
Practically, that means you cannot swap in a random furnace pad on the exhaust side. Buy media rated to the 98% capture standard and keep the manufacturer’s efficiency documentation on file. Do I have to buy filters from GFS to keep my warranty or compliance?
No. Compliance depends on using exhaust media demonstrated to meet the 98%-by-weight capture standard and keeping the documentation — not on the brand printed on the frame. Any equivalent-grade filter cut to your booth’s size satisfies the rule. Check your equipment warranty terms separately.
My GFS part number is discontinued. Now what?
Ignore the number and match the media and size. Measure the filter opening, identify whether it is a ceiling pad, fiberglass arrestor, or pocket bag, and order the equivalent grade. A custom cut covers any nonstandard dimension.
Can I use the same media in the ceiling and the exhaust?
No. Ceiling media is a tackified diffusion pad tuned for clean incoming air; exhaust media is a high-loading arrestor or bag built to capture paint solids at 98% by weight. They are not interchangeable — using the wrong one hurts either finish quality or compliance.
How often should I change GFS ceiling and exhaust filters?
